Renowned human rights lawyer and former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Professor Chidi Odinkalu, has delivered a searing critique of Nigeria’s current political leadership, accusing them of lacking the discipline, vision, and seriousness required to build a functioning nation.

Speaking during a recent interview with Channels Television, Odinkalu painted a troubling picture of a political class driven by self-interest and lacking in moral or intellectual preparedness for leadership.

“They are not interested, that is why a minister will consume alcohol, come to national TV and abuse all of them,” he said. “Saying this one came to collect money from me yesterday, that one came and collect land today… because these people are not fully prepared for what it takes to grow a nation.”

According to Odinkalu, this kind of public misconduct and reckless behavior by high-ranking government officials reflects a deeper rot in the system. He described the political elite as being more interested in personal gain than in public service, adding that governance has been reduced to a circus of scandals and accusations.

Odinkalu warned that until leadership is taken seriously by both those in office and the citizens who elect them Nigeria will continue to struggle with underdevelopment, corruption, and poor public accountability.

He urged Nigerians to demand more from their leaders, calling for a shift toward competence, discipline, and genuine commitment to nation-building.
