Former President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that during his time as president, his Central Bank Governor alleged that $49.8 billion was missing from the national coffers between January 2012 and July 2013. He said after investigation, it was discovered that the NNPC could not properly account for just 1.48 billion dollars.
In a video shared by Symfoni TV, Jonathan said during that period the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, invited him to a meeting in Germany. He said that as soon as he arrived, Merkel immediately asked him if it was true that $49.8 billion was missing under his government.
Jonathan said he told her that if such a huge sum truly went missing in Nigeria, both the federal and state governments would have been unable to pay workers’ salaries.
In Jonathan’s words: “Angela Merkel, then the Chancellor of Germany, asked me for a bilateral. She invited me, so I went there with some of my ministers. Immediately we got in, she did not even allow me to sit down, she said ‘President Jonathan, Did Nigeria lose 49.8 billion dollars?’. I just looked at her and said, ‘Your Excellency, Germany economy is quite strong so if you lose 50 billion dollars you will not notice it, but in Nigeria if we lose 50 billion dollars the federal government and state government will not be able to pay salaries.
