In a recent statement via his official X account, former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Sam Amadi, has criticized former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai for opposing Peter Obi’s one-term promises.
El-Rufai had advised Obi to stop making pledges that major reforms couldn’t be achieved in a single term if elected president.
Amadi said El-Rufai’s position was wrong, he argued that it is possible to start meaningful changes in one term, even if complete reforms take longer.
”‘Four years is not enough to accomplish anything.’
Meaning: You cannot honestly say Tinubu has failed until after 8 years” Amadi wrote.
According to Amadi, discouraging leaders from promising reforms undermines political accountability.
He explained that four years is enough to make significant progress if a government focuses on priorities.
Amadi added that citizens have the right to expect concrete results within a term.
He warned that dismissing one-term pledges could lower public trust in politicians.
Amadi reminded El-Rufai that one cannot fully judge a president’s performance only after four years, but this does not mean nothing can be done.
He said it is unfair to suggest that efforts in a first term are irrelevant.
He further noted that assessing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s achievements should be done after a full tenure, but first-term progress still matters.
