According to Leadership newspaper,eight residents were killed in Wereng Camp Community, located in the Riyom local government area of Plateau State, following a fresh attack by armed men. The attackers, suspected to be herdsmen, also burnt down several houses and took food supplies from the community during the violent incident.

Credible reports revealed that the gunmen arrived late on Wednesday night and began shooting randomly, causing panic and destruction in the region as many people in the community were injured and have been taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

A source from the community, who chose to remain anonymous, revealed that the attack mostly affected vulnerable groups such as children and elderly people, who were caught in the violence.

Efforts to get official confirmation from security agencies were unsuccessful because the calls and text messages sent to them are yet-to-be responded to.

However, the incident added to a series of violent attacks that have plagued Plateau State in recent months while communities in the neighboring local government areas of Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, and Riyom have also experienced similar attacks by armed groups.

The growing insecurity has raised serious concerns among state officials and residents.

In response to the ongoing violence, Plateau State Governor Barrister Caleb Mutfwang has called on the federal government to urgently intervene to protect the citizens and restore peace.

To help curb further attacks, Governor Mutfwang has imposed restrictions on motorcycle use, banning them from operating between 7p.m and 6a.m across the state until further notice.

Additionally, night grazing has been banned to enhance security and vigilance as these measures are aimed at preventing further violence and restoring calm to the troubled region.

The recent attack in Wereng Camp highlighted the urgent need for increased security presence and lasting solutions to end the cycle of violence in Plateau State.
