Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has stated that the new coalition is not worried about defections from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), during an interview with NIGERIAN TRIBUNE.
Lawal revealed that he is working with a coalition led by Atiku Abubakar.
Atiku was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general election.
Lawal is a member of the Contact, Mobilization, and Finance Committees of the coalition.
He explained that the group is more concerned about voters than political parties.
Lawal stressed that democracy gives people the freedom to choose. He said a political party is not like a religion.
He noted that the coalition wants to win the support of ordinary citizens who are most affected by bad governance.
He also dismissed claims of anti-party activities, according to him, what matters most is the interest of the people.
He said the coalition wants to bring change to the system and give power back to voters.
Lawal stated that many Nigerians are suffering, he said the coalition is building a strong movement to challenge the current political system.
He believes that voters, not politicians, will decide the future of the country.
The former SGF made it clear that the coalition’s focus is not on political leaders switching parties.
“Yes, that’s democracy. It isn’t slavish; it isn’t religion. Political party isn’t a religion. Even in religion, people proselytize; you change. Look, the way we are going, eventually, it is to voters at the polling booth that we will appeal, not any political party. Let the governors continue to defect, we don’t care. If we wake up one morning and heard that all the 36 states governors and the FCT are in APC, we don’t care. It is immaterial, They have only 37 votes; maybe we add their families. Maybe you get 1,000 votes. The voter is what we are targeting and the voter is the victim of the system we are against.
