A recent interview aired on Channels Television on Monday, July 7, 2025, has stirred heated debate after Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi declared he does not need a private jet to serve the country, citing his time as governor when he used a Peugeot 406 for official duties.

Reacting swiftly, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and media aide, Lere Olayinka, took to his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle to criticize Obi’s remarks. Olayinka described the statement as “another performance act,” accusing the former Anambra governor of playing to the gallery.

“Someone that charters jets across the country is now telling Nigerians he used 406 and doesn’t need a jet. How convenient! This is not governance by drama,” Olayinka posted.

Obi, in the widely viewed interview, had stated: “As governor, I used a 406. I travelled economy. I don’t need a jet to work for the people.”

The comment was in response to questions about public officials’ extravagant spending and the controversy surrounding politicians’ use of private jets.

Supporters of Obi praised his modesty and consistency, pointing to his well-known frugality and lifestyle, while critics, including Olayinka, accused him of hypocrisy and political showmanship.
