The presidency responded to recent criticism of President Bola Tinubu by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal.
Lawal, in an interview on Channels Television on Monday, had stated that he could not forgive President Tinubu, accusing him of arrogance, neglecting political allies, and failing to address grievances that dated back to before the 2023 general election.
He said Tinubu’s actions since taking office had confirmed his belief that the president was unwilling to acknowledge the contributions of those who supported his rise to power. Lawal also maintained that holding public office should not fundamentally change a person’s character or attitude.
However, According to The Guardian, while he was reacting in a statement on Tuesday, the Special Adviser to the President on Public Communication, Sunday Dare, claimed that Lawal was merely seeking “political oxygen.” In a post on his official X account, Dare described him as a “political content creator” and “political soothsayer” who, in a desperate bid for relevance, considered everyone and everything fair game.
He noted that Lawal had granted several provocative and unwarranted interviews in the past, but said none matched what he described as the incoherence and desperation displayed during his appearance on Channels Television on Monday. Dare added that the interview revealed “a deeply troubled soul” that was slowly unraveling, swinging in all directions, and wearing ideological inconsistency like a badge of honour.
“It was obvious that the entire performance on Channels yesterday was nothing more than a poorly scripted attempt to bait President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“This is the same man Babachir once swore the “wrath of God” should fall upon anyone who stood in Tinubu’s way to the presidency.
