In a recent viral video shared by Channels TV, Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly for the Agege constituency, made a bold declaration regarding his position in the legislature. He emphasized that nobody could remove him from his role as a member of the House of Assembly, a post he has held for over a decade. Obasa’s statement came after he recounted a disturbing incident where the Commissioner of Police reportedly assigned 200 officers to prevent him from accessing his home. He described how his supporters from Agege were detained, his children were restricted from entering their own home, and even his wife was locked inside, unable to leave the house.
According to Obasa, the actions against him were unprovoked and unwarranted. He insisted that his only “crime” was his outspoken opposition to the alleged mismanagement of public funds in the Lagos State House of Assembly. Specifically, he criticized the purported squandering of 200 million Naira, as well as a fresh claim by the majority of House members for an additional one billion Naira to purchase 45 Hilux vehicles for security purposes. Obasa expressed his dismay at these financial actions, which he believed were a misuse of public funds that could have been better spent.
In his speech, Obasa also reaffirmed his belief that his position as a legislator could only be changed through the due process of law, not through force or intimidation. He took a moment to express his gratitude to the people of Agege, who have consistently supported him by re-electing him to represent their interests in the state assembly. He also acknowledged the pivotal role of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who he described as a brother and ally in his political journey. Obasa emphasized their long-standing relationship, stating, “I have been with him since the SDP era, and I have pictures to prove it.”
This strong message from Obasa underlined his unwavering stance on political integrity and his commitment to fighting for the people of Agege. It also served as a reminder of the intricate and sometimes tense dynamics that play out behind the scenes in Nigerian politics. Despite the challenges, Obasa’s loyalty to his constituents and his political allies remains steadfast, as he continues to navigate the often tumultuous political landscape of Lagos State.
