Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has accused foreign powers, particularly the United States, of complicity in Nigeria’s security challenges by allegedly supplying weapons to extremist groups. Speaking on News Central TV from 18:41, Gumi said that international interference has worsened the country’s fight against terrorism and misrepresented local conflicts.

Quoting his own words, he stated, “I have told you Americans are arming Boko Haram with anti-aircraft guns.” He argued that the provision of such advanced weaponry to militant groups has given them a significant advantage over Nigerian security forces, making it difficult to restore peace in affected regions.

Gumi emphasized that the ongoing violence in Nigeria, including in the Middle Belt and northeastern states, is complex and often portrayed inaccurately. He insisted that Boko Haram and other groups are responsible for mass killings, but external actors supplying arms exacerbate the situation. According to him, foreign interference undermines Nigeria’s sovereignty and fuels further insecurity.

The cleric also defended local strategies to address violence, advocating for dialogue, mediation, and rehabilitation of repentant fighters. He stressed that community-led initiatives have made progress in areas like Southern Kaduna and Plateau, reducing conflict and fostering peace among affected populations.

Gumi warned that foreign involvement under the guise of humanitarian concern or intervention could destabilize Nigeria further. He urged Nigerians to focus on homegrown solutions, emphasizing that armed conflicts must be resolved internally through negotiation, accountability, and reconciliation, rather than relying on external powers that may have hidden agendas.

He concluded by calling for transparency and accurate reporting of all casualties, ensuring that both Muslims and Christians affected by violence are acknowledged, and stressing that lasting peace depends on Nigerian-led initiatives free from foreign manipulation. View, More,
