Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, has stated that the term Islamism should not be misunderstood as something negative. He made this clarification while responding to a statement made by Bishop Matthew Kukah about Islamism.
In a video shared by Symfoni TV from 8:00, Abubakar said Islamism is not about grabbing power in government or in any political space. He said Islamism is actually about promoting good governance in society and ensuring that leaders rule with justice and fairness.
Abubakar said the aim of Islamism is to make communities better and not to take control of power by force.
In Abubakar’s words: “I want to correct the notion that when Bishop Kukah talked about Islamism. You see you used some words maybe in a wrong manner or somebody might feel Islam is negative. Islamism is not aimed at seizing power at any particular forum. Islamism is after good governance in society. Goodluck Jonathan was president, we gave him 100 percent support though out his presidency. Nobody said anything negative about him, he knows that and he is here. So Islamism is not what you think it is, it is a wrong notion that you are bringing up here that it is to seize power. It is not to seize power, we are after good governance” See, More, Here>>>
