Residents of Oyo-Iwa, a once peaceful community in Kogi State, are now living in fear. Armed kidnappers have continued to attack the area, making life unbearable for the people. During a protest held by the residents, one of the women, Jenifer Modupe, shared the pain and fear that had taken over their lives.
In a video that was shared by Arise Television from 1.40, Modupe said that the kidnappers wrongly believe that everyone in the community is rich because the Dangote company operates nearby. “That’s why kidnappers are coming in killing us anyhow they like, thinking that because Dangote company is here, they think we’re all rich, they think we’re all Dangote family,” she said.
The situation has become so bad that some families have lost loved ones, while others have been forced to pay huge ransoms. “They are killing us like chickens, as if we’re goats. They’re killing us the way they like and taking our money from us, the one we’re suffering to earn. This community is empty, everybody has run away. They are oppressing us, the oppression is just too much,” Modupe cried.
She pleaded for help from the government and begged Dangote to offer jobs to the people. If we had jobs and money, maybe we could survive this. But we have nothing, she said.
Another resident, Elijah, explained that the kidnappers claim Dangote has given the community over 100 million naira, but the residents have not received anything. “We are suffering. We can’t even farm anymore,” Elijah added.
The people of Oyo-Iwa are calling for security, peace, and support to help them return to their normal lives.
