Senator Garba Maidoki, representing Kebbi South, has explained why military personnel stationed near Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, may not have engaged bandits who abducted students from the school.
Speaking in an interview with Channels TV from 12:59, Senator Maidoki cited military rules of engagement that require numerical superiority before confronting enemy forces. “I’m not a soldier. But I understand the rule of engagement in the army is one to two. Two soldiers to one bandit. So if they come with 300 motorbikes, that means 300 bandits, and you have only 25 soldiers—that is suicide. So even from there, the soldiers know their number one priority is to defend themselves,” he said.
The senator alleged that the Senate appropriated funds to establish four or five army recruitment and training centres to address the shortage of military personnel in vulnerable areas. However, he revealed that despite this budgetary allocation, only the Kaduna centre is operational, leaving other planned facilities unestablished.
The lawmaker argued that this failure to expand recruitment infrastructure has prevented the military from deploying sufficient troops to effectively counter bandit attacks. View, More,
