Former counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor has recounted a harrowing experience following his release on bail alongside other activists, including Omoyele Sowore.
Speaking during an interview on TV Platinum from 5:02, Ejimakor alleged that security operatives deployed teargas canisters directly at them shortly after their release.
“Teargas canisters were deployed directly at most of us,” he said. “Two had impact on me. In fact, if we didn’t have strong lungs, some of us would have given up the ghost on the spot.”
Ejimakor described the incident as a continuation of the state’s high-handed approach to civic activism, lamenting that peaceful advocates were being treated like criminals. He said the experience was both shocking and traumatic, especially given that those involved had just been granted bail by the court.
According to him, the sudden use of teargas caused panic and chaos among the group, with several people struggling to breathe or find safety. “We were unarmed, we were peaceful, and yet the response we got was teargas fired at close range,” Ejimakor said.
He further expressed concern over the increasing pattern of police hostility towards activists and journalists, calling on authorities to respect constitutional rights and ensure that peaceful citizens are protected, not persecuted.
Omoyele Sowore, who was also present at the scene, echoed Ejimakor’s account, condemning what he called a deliberate attempt to intimidate and silence dissenting voices.
Human rights observers have since called for an independent investigation into the incident, emphasizing the need for accountability within Nigeria’s security institutions. View, More,
