Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has shared more details about his planned protest calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). During an interview on the Mic-On Podcast from 34.29, Sowore explained that he reached out to several top political figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Goodluck Jonathan, and Peter Obi, to seek their support for the movement.
Sowore said former President Goodluck Jonathan responded positively to his call and invited him for a meeting. According to him, Jonathan expressed that while he could not make a public statement in support of Kanu’s release, he would discuss the issue privately with President Bola Tinubu. He also commended Sowore for standing up for justice and truth.
In contrast, Sowore revealed that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, did not respond directly to his outreach. He later learned that Obi had made a mild comment, suggesting that Kanu should not have been arrested.
Sowore expressed disappointment over Obi’s lack of active involvement, suggesting that Obi and his supporters might have seen the protest as an attempt to draw attention or take credit. He emphasized that fighting against injustice should not be about who gains recognition but about defending what is right and fair.
