Kano State is in mourning following a tragic motor accident on Saturday at Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area, which claimed the lives of at least 21 athletes returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The bus carrying 30 athletes reportedly fell off the bridge, causing the fatal crash.
In response, the Kano State Government announced a cash donation of one million naira to each family of the deceased, along with food items to support immediate burial arrangements.
This was disclosed by the Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam after receiving briefings from officials.
However, former Senator Shehu Sani condemned the compensation amount as insufficient.
On his X (formerly Twitter) account, he stated, “One million for each of the deceased athletes is not enough. Kano is rich enough to do more than that. The deceased died in active service.”
His remarks highlight the call for greater support and recognition for the athletes who lost their lives representing Kano State.
The Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a moment of collective grief for the state.
He assured that the government would provide necessary medical attention and support to the victims’ families and commended first responders for their swift action.
The tragic loss has cast a shadow over Kano’s participation in the festival, where the state had finished 13th overall with six gold, 13 silver, and 10 bronze medals.
The athletes were returning home to celebrate their achievements when the accident occurred.
