In a significant move to enhance transportation infrastructure, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo launched modern transit buses today, July 22, 2025 aiming to boost public mobility across the state. The event, held under the banner of “Boosting Transportation,” is said to mark a key initiative by the Edo State Government to improve accessibility and efficiency in public transport.

Speaking at the launch aired by TVC News from 5:28, Governor Okpebholo emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “We are committed to ensuring that Edo residents benefit from safer and more efficient public transit.” This launch is said to be part of broader efforts by the Edo State Transport Authority to revolutionize transportation within the state.

However, the event was not without political undertones. Recently, Governor Okpebholo faced criticism for his remarks regarding a potential visit by Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate. Defending his stance, Okpebholo humorously addressed the backlash, saying, “Just one word, and everybody was crying, I simply said, ‘Don’t come to Edo without telling me.’ I don’t know which one is paining them. Is it because I said they don’t have shishi? didn’t they say they don’t have shishi, so why are they crying?”

The governor’s comments have sparked a debate, with human rights lawyer Femi Falana criticizing them as a potential violation of constitutional rights. Despite this, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike supported Okpebholo, stating, “Governor Okpebholo, the statement you made is correct. Obi must inform you before coming to Edo State.”

This launch occurs against a backdrop of political maneuvering, as Okpebholo, who assumed office in November 2024, has been advised by Wike to focus on development rather than probing his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.
