Osita Okechukwu, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has stated that President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Enugu State has improve his chances of winning South-East votes in the 2027 elections, as reported by DAILY POST.
According to Okechukwu, Tinubu’s promises to bring investors and address the region’s challenges, if fulfilled, would build trust among South-East voters.
He praised the President for visiting the region despite receiving low support there in the 2023 elections.
During his visit on Saturday, Tinubu commissioned several projects initiated by Governor Peter Mbah.
These included 30 smart green schools, 60 new primary health centers, and the reconstruction of a 19-kilometer road connecting the airport to New Haven and Okpara Square.
Tinubu also met with South-East leaders and addressed critical national issues and defended the removal of the petrol subsidy, saying it was necessary for long-term economic stability.
He assured the leaders that his administration would focus on developing the Anambra Basin, a key energy reserve holding an estimated 1 billion barrels of oil and 30 billion cubic feet of gas.
The President further pledged to complete the Eastern Rail Line connecting Port Harcourt to Maiduguri.
He promised to modernize security infrastructure in the region and prioritize gas infrastructure as an alternative energy source.
Okechukwu highlighted three key outcomes of the visit, first, it gave Tinubu an opportunity to assess the South-East’s infrastructure challenges.
Second, it allowed him to engage directly with regional leaders.
Third, his promises to invest in railways, energy, and security are steps that could win the trust of the region’s voters.
“One is that the state visit accorded Mr President the golden opportunity to assess the unfortunate infrastructure deficit in the South-East geopolitical zone.”
“Secondly, it also obliged Mr President interaction arena with the leadership of our zone.”
“Thirdly, his uncommon pledge to embark on Standard Gauge Railways in Eastern Corridor like Western Corridor, Gas Pipeline and modernisation of security apparatus in the region.”
“What else will boost our electoral chances in 2027 general elections than shopping for investors and implement these projects?” he said.
