Human rights attorney Femi Falana has stated that there should only be one emir in Kano State, in line with the ruling by the Court of Appeal, and that the 16th Emir of Kano remains firmly in place despite the ongoing challenges.

Falana made these comments during the 21st Memorial Lecture for Chief Gani Fawehinmi in Lagos, in a video that has been widely shared, according to Daily Post.

“As legal professionals, it is crucial that we speak honestly among ourselves,” Falana began. “Your Majesty, congratulations on your victory in the Court of Appeal.”

He continued, addressing the ongoing legal dispute, “While your opponents may attempt to appeal to the Supreme Court, the matter has already been legally resolved. This is where the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) must intervene.”

Falana stressed that “The law is clear that chieftaincy matters do not fall under the category of fundamental rights, so no traditional ruler can claim to enforce their fundamental rights through the judiciary.”

He also noted that “The court has ruled that the Federal High Court does not have jurisdiction over chieftaincy matters. If some of our colleagues are misleading their clients and causing unnecessary disruption, the NBA must step in and hold them accountable.”

“Your Majesty, regardless of what happens next, whether in the Supreme Court or elsewhere, your position is secure. There can only be one emir in Kano, just as there cannot be two speakers in Rivers State. This confusion must be put to rest,” Falana concluded.

Hear him speak: “Your Majesty, wherever they are going, whether the Supreme Court or whatever, you have come to stay. And we must only have one emir in Kano. We can’t have two emirs in Kano, two speakers in Rivers. This confusion must stop,”
