former Rivers State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Emmanuel Deeyah, has expressed dismay over Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s handling of the state’s budget presentation amidst a legal dispute between two factions of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Speaking during an interview with Channels Television from 0:54, Deeyah called for adherence to the rule of law, citing a subsisting Court of Appeal judgment on the matter.
Deeyah criticized the governor’s decision to deviate from the court’s directive, describing it as shocking and contrary to the principles of governance. He emphasized that government must operate within the framework of laws and precedents, which are binding on all parties. Deeyah expressed concern over the potential implications of the governor’s actions, suggesting that they could undermine public confidence in the legal and governance processes.
In his words;
“There’s a subsisting judgment of the Court of Appeal where even the judge said that this is a joke taken too far. The Court of Appeal said he should re-present the budget to the Martins Amaewhule-led Assembly.”
“Government is based on laws and precedents. If the laws say do this, and the court, which is in the position to interpret the law, has also said do this, what then would be the basis for the governor to do otherwise?”
“Maybe he’s in a right position to do that, but I can’t understand where we’re headed,”
