A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dele Momodu has provided insights into the origin of the current crisis within the main opposition party.
During an interview with Arise TV from 3:13, he explained that the issues began after former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike failed to secure the party’s presidential ticket during the primaries, losing to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
He stated that following Nyesom Wike’s defeat, there was an expectation that he would be chosen as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate but, this did not materialize.
Recall that when the vice presidential candidate position was given to Ifeanyi Okowa, the former governor of Delta State, the divide within the party deepened, leading to Nyesom Wike and other members of the G5 governors withdrawing their support for Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy.
According to Dele Momodu, the combination of Wike’s loss in the primaries and his exclusion as the vice-presidential candidate marked the beginning of the internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party.
He said, “The crisis started from the then-governor Nyesom Wike, who lost to Atiku Abubakar. It was hoped that he will be a running mate to Atiku Abubakar. That didn’t happen. I think that’s where the problem started from. I’m a good student of history, so I like to situate things within historical context. The crisis in PDP started from the moment wike lost the primary, and also lost the bid for running mate.”
