In a recent statement via his official X account, former Senator Shehu Sani has called on northern senators to support the controversial tax reform bills.
His statement comes amid protests from northern governors and lawmakers opposing the bills.
Sani shared his views, highlighting the significance of the reforms and noted that senators from the South-South region had already endorsed the bills.
He described their support as a message for other regions to take similar steps.
“The South South Senators have endorsed the Tax reform Bill. This is a strong message to all the regions in the country to look inward for sustenance and development. There are times in life, you have to be evicted from your comfort level and be challenged before you explore the possibilities and greatness in your docile and dependent life. Even Saudi and The Emirates are preparing themselves for the post oil future, so should we. There is a message in that Bill,” Shehu Sani wrote.
The former senator stressed the need for Nigeria to adapt to changing realities and stated that the reforms could push the country to explore new opportunities beyond its reliance on oil.
He also compared Nigeria’s situation to that of countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, according to him, these nations are preparing for a future without oil and diversifying their economies and urged Nigeria to learn from their example.
