According to Nigerian Tribune, Former governor of Jigawa State and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Sule Lamido, has shared his insights on the future of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its prospects in the upcoming 2027 general elections. As one of the founding members of the PDP, Lamido’s views hold significant weight within the party’s leadership and among its supporters. His comments come at a time when the PDP is strategizing to reclaim power from the current ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by President Bola Tinubu.
Lamido expressed concerns about the internal challenges the PDP faces, particularly with what he perceives as efforts to undermine the party from within. According to him, there are elements both inside and outside the PDP working against its interests. This situation, he believes, has been detrimental to the party’s unity and its ability to effectively oppose the APC. Despite these challenges, Lamido remains optimistic about the PDP’s ability to regroup and present a formidable challenge in the next general elections.
One of the key issues Lamido addressed was the influence of Nyesom Wike, a former PDP member and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory under the APC administration. Wike’s association with the APC has raised eyebrows among PDP loyalists, leading to concerns about his allegiance and the implications for the party’s cohesion. Lamido pointed out that Wike’s role in the APC has created uncertainty and speculation about the future political dynamics between the two major parties.
Lamido also commented on the remarks made by former Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, who referred to Wike as a leader and indicated a willingness to support President Tinubu in the 2027 elections. Lamido viewed such statements as harmful to the PDP’s efforts to unify and strengthen its position ahead of the elections. He suggested that these remarks could be seen as evidence of a broader campaign to destabilize the PDP from within.
Despite these concerns, Lamido emphasized that the PDP is actively working to address its internal issues and refocus its strategy. He believes that with proper organization and dedication to the party’s core values, the PDP can overcome the challenges it currently faces. According to him, the party’s history and foundational principles provide a strong base upon which it can rebuild and mount a serious challenge to the APC in future elections.
