In a recent interview on Channels Television from 20.21, Doyin Okupe, a top political figure and former supporter of Peter Obi, made strong comments about Nigeria’s recent presidential candidates. When asked if Peter Obi would have done things differently as president, Okupe responded by saying, “Talk is cheap.”
Okupe acknowledged that Peter Obi was an excellent candidate, believing he was the best choice during the election. However, he admitted that Bola Tinubu, Nigeria’s current president, is showing strong leadership, especially when facing the country’s difficult challenges. Okupe noted, “If given time and understanding, Tinubu can lead Nigeria out of its problems.”
Referring to Obi’s campaign promise and recent statement to focus on production in Nigeria, Okupe questioned the practicality of this goal, considering Nigeria’s current financial struggles. He pointed out that 97% of Nigeria’s revenue is spent on paying off debt, leaving little for other needs. Okupe also emphasized how challenging it has been to end fuel subsidies, a change Tinubu is pushing despite the risks.
Okupe’s message was clear. Bold promises are easy to make, but real change requires hard choices, and he believes Tinubu is taking those steps.
