In a report by The Punch, a disturbing incident unfolded in Edo State at the close of 2024, when a 55-year-old man, Osaro Ahunwan, allegedly set fire to the home of his estranged wife, Tina Uyi. The incident occurred in Idumwonwina, near Oluku, in the Ovia North-East Local Government Area.
Tina, a 54-year-old businesswoman based in Italy, had returned to Nigeria on December 31, 2024, to celebrate the New Year with her family. What should have been a joyful occasion turned tragic when Osaro reportedly showed up at her home and was denied entry, triggering a violent response.
Tina’s refusal to let her estranged husband into her house was reportedly due to the end of their relationship. The couple had separated earlier in the year after Tina’s family returned her dowry in April 2024. When Osaro was denied entry, eyewitnesses claim he reacted by dousing the building with petrol and setting it on fire. The flames quickly spread, engulfing the entire house and causing extensive damage to property, including money in both local and foreign currencies.
Despite the devastation, Tina’s elderly parents were rescued from the fire by neighbors, who helped them escape unharmed. Tina herself sustained third-degree burns in the blaze and is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Benin. The Edo State Fire Service was called to the scene and worked to extinguish the flames, but the damage to the home was severe.
The police in Ekiadolor acted swiftly to arrest Osaro and Tina’s elder brother, Odaro Ovia Robo, who is accused of aiding Osaro by providing him with information about Tina’s movements. During interrogation, Osaro reportedly confessed to the crime, implicating Odaro in the process. Osaro also allegedly had a history of violence and threats against Tina, further deepening the alarming nature of the attack.
Tina spoke to media outlets from her hospital bed, recounting how Osaro had previously destroyed her vehicle and exhibited controlling behavior. She explained that his overbearing and suspicious nature had driven her to end their short marriage, which lasted less than two years. The couple’s relationship had been marked by constant tension, and Osaro’s threats to kill both himself and Tina in 2023 added to the escalating conflict.
In her remarks, “Due to his violent and overbearing character, I decided to quit the marriage that lasted less than two years. This time, he tried to come into my apartment and he committed this arson because I refused him entry.”
