Senate President Godswill Akpabio has highlighted the growth of internally generated revenue (IGR) in Nigerian states, pointing to Lagos State as a model of fiscal transformation while noting that Ogun State is rapidly catching up, according to a video posted on TVC.

Speaking during the inauguration of the Gateway International Airport in Ogun State in a video from 3:48 shared by TVC, Akpabio reflected on how Lagos evolved from generating about ₦5.6 billion monthly to approximately ₦69 billion. He attributed this growth to reforms and strategic economic planning that have strengthened revenue generation at the subnational level.

The Senate President also praised the pace of development in Ogun State, stating that its current IGR figures are approaching those of Lagos. He suggested that while official figures may appear conservative, the state’s actual revenue performance could be significantly higher, driven by expanding industrial investments and infrastructure development along key economic corridors.

According to him, “Of course, you can hear what is happening in Ogun State. Lagos started with a paltry N5.6 billion, but today, Lagos is sitting on N69 billion. Ogun State is almost getting to Lagos, even though Chief Oshoba is being a little bit careful. He said we’re getting N25 billion in IGR; I’m aware they’re getting up to 45 billion. They’re getting up to N45 billion in IGR. You started the engineering at the federal level; you have brought so many reforms to bring money to the subnationals.” Read_More…
