PDP Chieftain Segun Showunmi has strongly opposed suggestions of declaring a state of emergency in Osun State following recent local government clashes between PDP and APC supporters.
Speaking with Channels TV from 11:57, Showunmi offered a compelling history insight to challenge the proposal. “Whatever it is that is happening in Osun should not go beyond this. It was rumoured that some fellows are deceiving themselves that they are going to go and say that they want to start declaring a state of emergency in Osun State. For what, and why?” he questioned.
Segun Showunmi indicated how the former President, Goodluck Jonathan refused to declare a state of emergency in Borno State despite the insurgency: “Jonathan did not declare a state of emergency when the vice president was governor in Borno, even with all of the shenanigans of Chibok and all of that.”
The PDP leader dismissed the proportionality of such a drastic measure: “You are not going to say that you will declare a state of emergency over a little crisis. A small crisis has taken place, and people have died, but you are threatening the governor.”
He lamented that the Governor of Osun state, Sen. Ademola Adeleke is worried about this suggestion and had tried to give the impression that the situation is under control: “It got to the point that the governor is having to make it a talking point when the British envoys and commission went to him today. Do you know how that even makes us feel? Do you know how it makes us look?”
Redirecting focus to national priorities, Showunmi urged the ruling party to concentrate on economic issues rather than political maneuvering against opposition-controlled states. He voiced out his frustration over what he characterized as attempts to silence opposition ahead of the 2027 elections, accusing the APC of interfering in PDP and Labour Party affairs.
