Ihab Hassan, a Palestinian Christian activist, expressed his outrage on Wednesday regarding the treatment of women in Syria under the new government.
Through his verified X account, he conveyed his disgust at the forced requirement for women, whether journalists, officials, or ordinary citizens, to cover their heads with hijabs just to meet the new Syrian government leaders.
Hassan criticized the political transition in Syria, arguing that the Syrian people did not rise against Assad’s regime only to face a new form of oppression.
Here’s what he said on his X page,
“It is revolting to see women, whether journalists, officials, or ordinary citizens, forced to cover their heads with hijabs just to meet the new Syrian government leaders.
The Syrian people did not overthrow Assad’s criminal regime only to replace it with an oppressive Islamist one.”
His comments highlight growing concerns about women’s rights and the trajectory of freedoms in the aftermath of significant political change.
This sentiment reflects a broader apprehension about the influence of conservative ideologies on social norms and civil liberties in the region.
