Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged Muslim community leaders to promote unity and prevent religious divisions. During a recent meeting with these leaders, he raised concerns about efforts by certain individuals or groups attempting to exploit religious differences for personal gain.
According to Daily Post, Makinde recognized the strong support the Muslim community has provided to his administration and emphasized the need for citizens to remain united, regardless of their faith. He highlighted the importance of harmony in addressing divisive strategies that could disrupt social cohesion.
This meeting occurred in the wake of a tragic incident involving a stampede at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, leading to casualties. In light of this, the governor vowed to implement appropriate legal actions to ensure future events are conducted safely and to prevent similar tragedies.
In his remarks, the governor reminded those present that leadership is temporary, and that collaborative efforts toward societal harmony will benefit future generations. He called on the community to refrain from politicizing religious issues, stressing that unity and cooperation are crucial for the advancement and stability of Oyo State.
Makinde said, “I will keep saying it: if people want to divide us along religious or political lines, we as leaders must resist that attempt and expose them.”
