According to Punch Newspaper, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has assured the public that he would not authorize the demolition of church buildings during the state’s infrastructure development projects. He made this statement on Sunday during the dedication service of the new church auditorium of Jesus Christ Temple Ministry, situated at Ebrumede Roundabout, Effurun. The governor emphasized his commitment to preserving places of worship while pursuing developmental goals.
Speaking at the event, Governor Oborevwori recounted how a proposed infrastructure design could have led to the partial demolition of the church’s auditorium. “Over a year ago, when we came to inspect this place and the concept design was presented to me, I discovered that more than half of this church auditorium would be removed,” he said. He further disclosed that he instructed the Ministry of Works to revise the design to prevent the destruction of the church.
The governor, who is an elder in the Living Faith Church, highlighted his respect for religious institutions and their importance in society. “As an elder in the Living Faith Church, I will not be part of a situation where a church building will be destroyed,” Oborevwori stated. His remarks were met with applause from the congregation, who expressed gratitude for his intervention.
Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to balancing infrastructural development with the preservation of sacred spaces. He assured the public that every effort would be made to avoid actions that could undermine religious harmony or community trust. “Development must be inclusive and considerate of all stakeholders,” he added.
The dedication service, attended by government officials, clergy, and church members, served as a platform for the governor to reiterate his support for religious institutions.
