Former Vice President and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2023 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar has stated that when he was defamed in 2019, he didn’t use the police to frighten the citizen who defamed him.
This statement was contained in a report that was published by News Central Tv on Wednesday.
This statement is coming after human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi was arrested by the police.
In the post that Atiku Abubakar made on his official X handle, he said anyone who feels aggrieved by defamatory statements has the right to seek restitution in court.
He said when he was defamed some years back, he approached the court. He said he is currently pursuing damages for the harm done to his reputation and integrity.
The former Vice President said he wants Dele Farotimi to be released unconditionally.
He was quoted as saying that;
“If anyone feels aggrieved by defamatory statements, they have the right to seek restitution in court, not from the state’s enforcers. It is an abhorrent abuse of power to use the police as a tool for personal vendettas.
“I was defamed in 2019. I did not use the police to flex my biceps and frighten the defaming citizen but rather brought the case to court, where I am currently pursuing damages for the harm done to my reputation and integrity. As a result, I want Dele Farotimi’s immediate and unconditional release”.
