Ismail Jimoh, the older brother of the late Abdulqadir Jimoh, a 35-year-old poultry farmer who died under tragic circumstances while in the custody of the Kwara State Police Command, recounted the events leading to his brother’s arrest and death in an interview with The Punch.
Ismail explained that the family was called to the police station following the death of his sibling. The officers told them that Abdulqadir had killed himself in his cell when they arrived. Ismail and his family, however, questioned this justification. He said that when they saw bloodstains on the floor of the office where the police were speaking to them, they became suspicious.
Recounting the events that led to his arrest, Ismail explained that on Thursday, December 19, 2024, Abdulqadir had asked him for N350,000 to settle a debt owed to a co-worker. Ismail informed him that he didn’t have that amount. He also shared Abdulqadir’s predicament with his mother and others.
The following day, Ismail’s mother gave him N75,000 to purchase dressed chickens for sale, and one of their sisters contributed N350,000 from her savings, bringing the total to N425,000.
Later, a boy named Jelili Kehinde, who lived with him in Offa, called and asked him to come pick up a message. When Abdulqadir arrived, he found Jelili, a motorcycle rider (okada rider), and a policeman who immediately arrested him.
Abdulqadir was taken to the CID at the police headquarters in Ilorin. Around 5:30 p.m., he was permitted to notify them of his arrest. That evening, the deceased’s mother visited the station with a friend to try to secure his bail but left afterward.
However, at about 10 p.m. the same day, the police contacted one of their sisters to come and arrange Abdulqadir’s bail.
On Saturday morning, at around 7 a.m., six family members went to the police station, but they were not allowed in. They returned home, only to receive another call from the police at about 9 a.m., asking them to come back to the headquarters.
Hear him speak: “they took us to an Assistant Commissioner of Police who said he was from Ilorin and told us that our brother hanged himself in the cell where he was kept at midnight using the shirt he was wearing. He pleaded with us to take the matter as an act of God. But before he took us to the cell, we noticed bloodstains on the floor of the office where he addressed us.
