Babafemi Ojudu, a former Special Adviser on Political Matters, has said that President Bola Tinubu outsmarted ex-President Muhammadu Buhari to secure the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket in 2022, as reported by DAILY POST.

Speaking on the podcast State Affairs, Ojudu explained how Tinubu overcame huge challenges to emerge victorious in the APC primary election.

He claimed Buhari did not fully support Tinubu or the then Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, during the process.

Ojudu described Buhari’s lack of involvement as a critical factor.

He said the former president did not mobilize key supporters, such as governors and aides, to back Osinbajo.

Ojudu highlighted that Tinubu capitalized on this situation, using strategic moves to gain the upper hand and revealed that he knew Osinbajo will lose.

According to him, the system heavily favored those who had strong backing from influential figures.

In the months leading to the APC primary, there were rumors that Buhari favored Ahmad Lawan, the then Senate President, over both Tinubu and Osinbajo.

However, the final results from the primary election told a different story.

Tinubu secured 1,271 votes, followed by Rotimi Amaechi with 316 votes, Osinbajo with 235 votes, and Lawan with 152 votes.

Ojudu credited Tinubu’s success to his strategic thinking and ability to handle political challenges and described Tinubu as a skilled politician who outperformed his rivals despite facing resistance.

“I knew Osinbajo was going to lose the primary, I saw it coming.”

“I used to refer to Buhari as a one-man majority and he never mobilized his team towards Osinbajo and I think Tinubu outsmarted him in so many different ways,” he said.
