Adam Taggart, a well-known cryptocurrency and stock brokerage expert in the United States, has reacted to news of an internet fraudster (Yahoo Boy) in Nigeria using his identity to scam people online.
The suspect, Patrick Akpoguma, was recently arrested by the Zone 2 Police Command, covering Lagos and Ogun states. Nigerian Tribune revealed that Akpoguma had purchased a mask for $11,200 to impersonate Taggart on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
Taggart, in a post on his X account (formerly Twitter) described the situation as one of the most bizarre experiences tied to his name. He urged the public to remain cautious, emphasizing that he would never solicit anyone through social media for business or financial matters
Akpoguma is also accused of engaging in a range of fraudulent activities, including romance scams, cyber hacking, and cryptocurrency fraud. Despite offering a ₦174 million bribe to evade arrest, police officers rejected the offer and ensured his detention.
In Taggart’s words: “So, this is one of the crazier things ever to happen in my name. Remember: I will NEVER directly solicit you over social media. If you get randomly contacted, it’s not me, it’s a scammer like this evil nutball. Report to authorities & block them”
