The recent actions of 27 lawmakers from Rivers State, led by Martin Amaewhule, have been openly criticised by the state’s governor, Siminalayi Fubara, who has described their defection as a terrible mistake.

The governor emphasised that their choice to defect was unwise and something they would probably come to regret, saying that this outcome was dictated by God. The lawmakers, in his view, have broken away from unity and alignment, so they are no longer involved in the government’s plans.

Governor Fubara was disappointed, thinking back on the assistance he had given them before and his desire to collaborate despite their differences. He stated this in a video that was shared by Symphoni TV From 1:42.

“We all know what happened when they (27 lawmakers) crossed, and how did they cross? It is because of our God that they made that mistake. They are gone, and they are gone,” he stated, suggesting that the group had miscalculated in thinking they could act independently and still receive his support.

Further addressing their defection, Governor Fubara revealed that the declaration of their seats as vacant, a decision made in December 2023, remains in effect. This decision, he suggested, would ultimately lead to the lawmakers being removed from political influence.

“Let me tell you, when I wanted to help them, I accepted to help them because we are all one and we disagree to agree. They thought they were smart. What is holding them is the declaration of their seats vacant that was done in December 2023,” he said, emphasising his resolve to stand by this decision.

The governor also dismissed any notion that he might take steps to reverse this action, explaining that his upcoming 2025 budget will not include any adjustments to nullify the vacancy declarations. “I know they don’t know anything; they think I am like them. We are not doing any budget to nullify that decision; it is what will send them to their villages. For me, as I am talking to you, I have started preparing my budget for 2025,” Fubara concluded, underscoring his determination to move forward without them.
