A leader of the Rivers Emancipation Movement, Solomon Tamuno Tonye, has expressed deep concern over the political situation in Rivers State as suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara prepares to return to office.

Speaking in an interview with Silverbird TV from 18.57, Tonye said many people in Rivers State are living in fear because of uncertainty about what could happen when the governor resumes duties.

According to him, although there are no current security problems in the state, residents are worried because the federal government and key political figures have acted in ways that seem to ignore the Constitution. He compared the situation to how Iraqis felt after America invaded Iraq, saying Rivers’ people are watching “with fear and trembling” to see what comes next.

Tonye particularly pointed at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, saying he has the power to influence decisions about Fubara’s return. He said the minister can wake up one morning and still feel that more punishment should be given to the governor. And he can come up with any excuses.

He added that just as Wike has already announced a date for Fubara’s return, he could easily change his mind. “Just as he has announced that the governor will come on the 18th. He can still come back and announce that the governor will return in 2027,” Tonye said.

Tonye concluded that Rivers people have no control over these decisions and can only watch carefully to see what the federal government and Wike will do next.
