ADC Chieftain and legal practitioner Kenneth Okonkwo has urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to avoid contesting the 2027 presidential election, warning that doing so could damage his current reputation and international standing.
Speaking in an interview with Symfoni TV 1:07:22, Okonkwo explained why he believes Jonathan should stay out of the race despite reported interest from various political groups. “I will advise Jonathan: if I were him, I will not run, because they would hold him in the mud so much that he will regret he ever even contemplated it. He’s enjoying his life so much now. You know, if Jonathan travels to any country, he’s highly respected. So what is he looking for in Tinubu’s job?” he stated.
The ADC chieftain emphasized Jonathan’s current advantages over active political office. “For me, Jonathan now has more international credibility. He has been a former president with all the respect and all the accolades and all the paraphernalia of a former president. So if I were him, I wouldn’t even think of it,” Okonkwo said.
He revealed that his own position on Jonathan’s potential candidacy has evolved over time, influenced partly by statements from the former president’s wife. “There was a time I actually thought about Jonathan running. But after a while, after really close thinking, I’m like, ‘No, it will be a minus for him.’ Especially after the wife, you know, made some public comments saying he will not run, I think I agree with the wife on that,” he explained.
Okonkwo argued that the PDP’s interest in Jonathan stems from desperation rather than genuine political strategy.
He claimed the PDP is struggling for survival and needs a strong candidate to present any challenge to the ruling party in 2027. According to Okonkwo, the PDP would need a figure like Jonathan just to remain competitive, not necessarily to win the election. See, More, Here>>>
