According to a report by Daily Post on Friday, August 15, 2025, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dan Ulasi, has cautioned against the possible return of former President Goodluck Jonathan to the party and his rumored ambition to run for president in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Ulasi stated that such a move would work in favour of the incumbent President Bola Tinubu, making his re-election bid much easier.
Ulasi argued that Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president between 2010 and 2015 after completing the term of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and winning a subsequent full term, had already spent six years in office and had nothing new to bring to the table.
“He (Jonathan) has done six years, and I wish him the best of luck. If he wants to get back to the party, it will be an easy win for Tinubu because he has nothing else to offer,” Ulasi said.
The PDP stalwart stressed that the opposition party must present a fresh, credible candidate in 2027 to stand a real chance against the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He maintained that recycling former leaders would dampen the party’s appeal and weaken its chances of regaining power.
Ulasi’s remarks come amid speculation that Jonathan, who defected from the PDP to the APC ahead of the 2023 elections, could make a political comeback to his former party.
Political analysts note that Jonathan remains a significant figure in Nigerian politics, but his potential return to the PDP could stir internal divisions and strategic debates ahead of the next election cycle.
