Retired Assistant Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and former PRO in Enugu State, Denny Manuel Iwuchukwu has revisited the nation’s long battle against Boko Haram, accusing former President Muhammadu Buhari of politicising a security crisis that demanded unity and consistency.

In a recent interview on Signature TV from 14:04, Iwuchukwu drew a sharp comparison between the approaches of former Presidents Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari in tackling the insurgency. He commended Jonathan for confronting Boko Haram with what he described as uncommon resolve.

“When our former president was on seat, I mean Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Ebele Jonathan gave Boko Haram a serious fight of their lives,” he stated, insisting that the former president demonstrated genuine commitment to weakening the terror group at a critical period in Nigeria’s history.

Iwuchukwu argued that instead of building on the momentum Jonathan created, Buhari politicised the counter-terrorism efforts, introducing narratives that, in his view, deepened division rather than promoting national unity.

He emphasised, “Our late President Muhammadu Buhari came and said that Goodluck Jonathan was fighting the North by fighting Boko Haram.”

According to the retired NSCDC officer, such statements were dangerous because they framed a national security issue as an ethnic agenda, thereby weakening public trust and eroding the collective resolve needed to confront insurgents.

Iwuchukwu noted that Nigeria’s fight against terrorism requires consistent leadership, non-partisan support for security agencies, and a national mindset that rises above regional loyalties. He warned that when leaders attach ethnic or political sentiments to security operations, insurgent groups benefit from the disunity that follows. View, More,
