Former Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, has spoken about the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, saying the situation is more about power and control than the safety of the people.

In a video shared by SYMFONI TV, Dalung said Rivers State is being dragged into a political war that has nothing to do with the well-being of its citizens. According to him, the appointment of a sole administrator to conduct local government elections was not in the interest of democracy. He explained that such actions create what he called “an ignoble democratic tradition,” where elections are controlled instead of being free and fair.

Dalung argued that the entire crisis is about who controls the massive oil revenues in the state. He noted that the governor, who was suspended, would eventually return to power but face a hostile House of Assembly. He added that the Assembly, once made up of members from the PDP, had suddenly switched to the APC, leaving the governor politically isolated.

Speaking on claims that Rivers State was unsafe, Dalung disagreed. He said during his visits to Port Harcourt, he never experienced violence.

“I’ve been to Port-hacourt a couple of times, under this state of emergency, there has been no evidence of any threat. I even went out at night to attend parties, to test whether there was indeed some threat, I didn’t hear gunshot for one day,” he said.

Dalung concluded that the so-called “state of emergency” was only a political excuse to protect a powerful godson from disgrace, not to secure the lives of ordinary people.
