In a passionate address during a Senate session, Senator Adams Oshiomhole strongly criticized the recommendation to offer 200 million compensation to the family of a two-year-old child killed during a National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) operation in Delta State. A video of the moment, posted on YouTube, captures Oshiomhole’s fierce objection to what he describes as a failure to pursue real justice.

Oshiomhole rejected the idea that financial compensation could replace accountability, especially in a case of murder. He said the officer involved must not be allowed to walk free simply because money has exchanged hands. “In this case, a human being has been murdered. Money does not compensate for murder. I’m not a lawyer, but when it involves a serious case of murder, the courts don’t impose monetary compensation as the appropriate punishment,” he argued.

According to him, “The appropriate thing to do, in my view, Mr. President, is to recommend to the Attorney General of the Federation that this murderer wearing an NDLEA uniform should be prosecuted according to Nigerian law with regard to murder. The laws are clear. For the one who is alive and they need treatment and all of that, fine, whatever needs to be done can be done. But for the killing of someone, officers need to know that the uniform is not a license to kill and go home and sleep with your own children. May it not happen to any of us, and money does not compensate for the loss of a child who is completely innocent.”

Oshiomhole urged the Senate to take a firmer stance. He called for a resolution recommending that the Attorney General of the Federation investigate the matter and prosecute the officer or officers involved in the killing. For him, justice must go beyond compensation and reach those directly responsible.
