Former Senator George Thompson Sekibo has stated that dislodging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election would be an uphill task, citing the entrenched powers of incumbency in Nigeria’s political system.

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Sekibo emphasized the strategic advantage held by a sitting president and the structural realities that make electoral defeat unlikely for someone already in power.

“It’s very difficult to remove a sitting president, so you can’t remove Tinubu in 2027 election,” Sekibo said, adding that opposition parties need to be more pragmatic in their expectations and approach.

He elaborated that Tinubu, like many incumbents before him, will benefit from control of federal institutions, political networks, and significant resources that often give the ruling party a dominant edge during elections.

While Sekibo stopped short of declaring support for the president, he urged opposition groups to rethink their strategies rather than rely solely on anti-incumbency sentiments. “If you think shouting will defeat a sitting president, you are wasting your time,” he warned.

Sekibo also advised southern politicians to close ranks and push for greater unity ahead of 2027, especially if they are serious about power rotation and regional balance. His comments come amid ongoing discussions over zoning and the direction of the next presidential contest.

His remarks are already generating reactions across the political spectrum, with some describing them as realistic, while others see them as defeatist.

As the 2027 race slowly begins to shape up, Sekibo’s assessment is likely to fuel debate about the strengths of incumbency and the feasibility of a major political upset in Nigeria’s presidential elections.
