The South-South Zonal Secretary of the PDP, George Turner, who was elected during the Calabar Congress, has urged people to stop framing the issues surrounding the congress as being solely about Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister.

During an interview with Arise TV from 9:56 following the inauguration of the Emmanuel Ogidi-led South-South Zonal Caretaker Committee, Turner expressed deep concern over the level of impunity within the party.

He criticized the actions of the National Working Committee (NWC), the acting chairman, and other influential officials, describing their conduct as alarming and disappointing.

Turner emphasized that the party’s constitution provides clear guidelines on these matters. He pointed out that Article 27 explicitly outlines the procedures for convening a zonal executive committee meeting and defines its functions, including the organisation of congresses.

He stated that Article 28 clearly specifies the responsibilities of the congress, particularly in electing officers into the zonal working committee and determining who has the authority to convene the congress.

He insisted that the ongoing controversy should not be centred on Wike, stressing that the real issue is the need to uphold the constitution and ensure that due process is followed.

He said, “The level of impunity that goes on, either by the NWC, the acting chairman, or whatever strong officers that are there, is really unfortunate. It gives me a lot of concern to see that leaders that we should really look up to are operating in a manner that is terrifying. The constitution is clear. Article 27 is very clear as to how a zonal executive committee meeting can be convened, the functions of the zonal executive committee to convene a congress. Article 28 is very clear as to the duty of the congress to elect officers into the zonal working committee and who is to convene the congress; it is very clear. What is there? It’s not about Wike. Why are they making the issue about Wike? There’s no Wike anywhere. It is the constitution and the right to do things properly.”
