Former Senator Dino Melaye has warned Nigerians not to perceive the ongoing legal crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as merely an isolated issue confined to one political party. He urged citizens to look beyond party lines and understand the situation as a broader threat to the country’s democratic governance and institutions.

Speaking in a recent interview, Melaye explained that focusing solely on the ADC’s internal disputes is shortsighted and ignores the wider implications for Nigeria’s political landscape. According to him, the crisis highlights systemic challenges that could affect not just one party, but the functioning of democratic processes across the nation.

“It’s not about ADC; it’s an attack on democracy and democratic institutions in this country,” Melaye asserted. He stressed that when the internal processes of political parties are undermined, it endangers fundamental democratic principles such as fair representation, transparency, and the rule of law. These principles, he argued, are critical for the stability and credibility of the country’s governance.

Melaye noted that the legal and administrative wrangling within the ADC, while appearing as an internal party matter, reflects a dangerous precedent where political processes can be influenced externally. Such interventions, he warned, could weaken the authority of regulatory institutions and erode public confidence in the democratic system.

“The issue goes beyond party politics. When party processes are manipulated, it affects all citizens. It threatens the fairness of elections, the independence of institutions, and ultimately, the trust Nigerians have in their government,” he said.

The former senator also highlighted the potential risks to Nigeria’s democratic institutions if political interference continues unchecked. He argued that the judiciary, electoral bodies, and other regulatory agencies must operate independently and without external influence to ensure that democratic norms are upheld.

According to Melaye, allowing legal disputes within political parties to be exploited for partisan advantage undermines the legitimacy of governance structures. “If these institutions are weakened or improperly influenced, the foundation of a stable and transparent government could be severely damaged. It’s not just about ADC; it’s about the survival of our democracy,” he added.

Analysts agree that party crises, such as the one currently facing the ADC, can serve as a litmus test for the resilience of democratic institutions in Nigeria. They note that the way these disputes are handled has significant implications for electoral credibility, political stability, and citizens’ trust in the system.

Melaye urged Nigerians, civil society, and political stakeholders to pay close attention to the broader consequences of the crisis. He emphasized the need for vigilance and advocacy to protect democratic norms, arguing that safeguarding party processes is integral to maintaining a functioning multiparty democracy.

“Every Nigerian should be concerned about this. It’s not just an ADC matter; it’s about the future of our democracy and the strength of our institutions. We cannot afford to allow partisan interests to erode the principles that hold our government accountable,” he said. Read_More…
