According to a report by Daily Post on Monday, October 27, 2025, Laolu Akande, former spokesman to ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has expressed concern over the ongoing legal battle involving the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Akande stated that the recent developments in Kanu’s trial suggest that the separatist leader is not interested in having the case concluded in court.
His remarks followed another twist in the proceedings at the Abuja Federal High Court, where Kanu reversed his earlier decision to represent himself.
The case, which has dragged on for years, took a new turn last week when Kanu informed the court that he had disengaged his legal team.
He had declared his intention to personally handle his defense before Justice James Omotosho.
However, during the resumed hearing, he changed his position and maintained that the Federal Government had no valid charges against him.
This sudden change of approach has raised fresh concerns about the direction of the trial.
Akande, who shared his opinion in a video message, highlighted that while Kanu deserves a fair and speedy trial, the Federal Government has also not handled the matter effectively.
He observed that the prolonged court process and frequent changes in Kanu’s defense strategy have complicated the situation further.
According to him, these developments point to a need for both parties to reconsider their approach to resolving the issue.
The former presidential aide emphasized that Kanu’s case has become more of a political problem than a purely legal one.
He urged that rather than allowing the trial to continue indefinitely, the government and Kanu should explore a political solution that could bring an end to the prolonged conflict.
Akande’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among some Nigerians who believe that dialogue might be more effective than continued litigation.
Observers note that Kanu’s ongoing detention and repeated court sessions have not only heightened tensions in parts of the South-East but also contributed to social and political unease across the country.
Many have expressed concerns that the unresolved nature of his case continues to fuel division and mistrust between the government and sections of the population sympathetic to the IPOB cause.
Meanwhile, legal experts have argued that the shifting positions by Kanu could further delay the trial process.
They noted that frequent changes in his legal representation and approach could affect the court’s ability to make meaningful progress.
Despite this, they insist that due process must be followed to ensure fairness and justice.
As the case continues, attention remains on how both the Federal Government and Kanu’s camp will proceed.
While the court process is expected to continue, the call for a political resolution seems to be gaining more traction.
Many believe that a balanced approach that combines justice with reconciliation may be the only way to bring lasting peace to the matter.
He said: “The IPOB leader deserves a fair and prompt trial but while the Federal government has also not managed this case properly, it’s becoming clear that Nnamdi Kanu doesn’t want this trial to be sorted out in a law court. View, More,
