Former President Goodluck Jonathan has predicted that all African countries currently under military leadership will return to civilian government within the next decade.

Speaking during an interview with Symfoni TV from 11:00, Jonathan expressed confidence in the eventual restoration of democracy across the continent. “You carry a gun today, take over government. With time, society will be tired of you and they will ask you to go. It will not take more than 10 years for all these countries to go back to civil rule and they will join ECOWAS. So for now, even if only five countries out of the 15 are ready to carry on with ECOWAS, they should. We should not bother about that and begin to change our position. We must stand firm. We cannot accept military rule,” he said.

The former president argued that Guinea-Bissau’s political establishment would reject the military takeover following the disrupted election process. “The political class will want the results of the election to be announced. Nobody should take citizens of a country for a ride. People did not go to work. People wasted their time, queued up, voted, and when they were announcing results, then you come as soldiers and you scuttled the results. So the political class will never accept that,” he stated.

Jonathan also accused Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of collaborating with the military to seize power. He questioned the authenticity of the coup, arguing that it would be impossible for a military government to overthrow a civilian administration and then permit the deposed leader to grant interviews.
