According to the report from SYMFONI TV, The political turmoil within the Rivers State House of Assembly took a new turn today, as the faction led by the Speaker, Hon. Martins Amaewhule, issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara to submit the 2025 budget for the state. This development highlights ongoing tensions over the state’s governance and the implementation of key reforms.

Hon. Amaewhule and his faction have called for urgent amendments to two critical laws that govern local government elections in Rivers State. These laws, the Local Government Law and the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) Law, are now seen as outdated in light of recent changes made to the Electoral Act by the National Assembly.

Addressing his colleagues in the Assembly, Hon. Amaewhule pointed out the significant discrepancies between the state laws and the newly amended Electoral Act. “Honorable members, you know that the Electoral Act amended by the National Assembly has made some adjustments to matters concerning elections, and our Local Government Law and Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission law that says how local government elections should be conducted in Rivers State definitely needs amendment,” he said.

He emphasized the need for urgent legislative action, warning that “these two laws cannot conform with the Electoral Act. What it means is that the onus is now on this House of Assembly to review these two laws and come up with amendments that will make these laws now become consistent with the Electoral Act.”

The call for amendments to these laws underscores the growing frustration with what some members of the House consider a failure of leadership, particularly in relation to electoral transparency and governance at the local government level. The faction now demands that Governor Fubara respond quickly by presenting the 2025 budget to avoid further escalation of the crisis.
