Aishat Oyebode (née Muhammed), the eldest daughter of the late General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, spoke about the tragic event of February 13, 1976, when her father was killed just seven months after becoming Nigeria’s leader. In an interview with Daily Trust, she talked about how his death remains one of the saddest moments in Nigeria’s history. She also shared how it affected their family and mentioned the plans to mark the 50th anniversary of his passing next year.

When she was told during the interview that forty-nine years after his death, the N20 note which has his portrait is now worthless in present day Nigeria as it cannot buy anything. Aishat acknowledged that 49 years after her father’s assassination, the N20 note bearing his portrait has lost its value in present-day Nigeria, as it can no longer purchase anything significant.

She said, “It is disheartening to see that the N20 note, which carries my father’s image, has become nearly worthless; symbolic of the economic decline and grinding poverty that plague millions of Nigerians today. This loss of value is not limited to the N20 note alone but extends to other denominations bearing the faces of Nigeria’s heroes—figures who stood for sacrifice, integrity and nation-building.”

Further talking, she noted that the difference between what the N20 note once stood for and its low value today reflects the hardships people face. This, she said, shows the need for strong leadership that can restore economic dignity and revive the hopes of Nigerians.

She explained that her father supported policies that promoted fair wealth distribution, self-sufficiency, and economic growth. To tackle the current economic challenges, she emphasized the need for bold leaders who put the well-being of the people first and work towards a prosperous and independent Nigeria.
