According to Punch, The Federal Government has commenced the evacuation and demolition of illegal structures under the Iddo Bridge in Lagos, citing critical safety risks and the potential collapse of the bridge.

The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, issued the directive on Sunday during an inspection of the bridge with structural engineers and representatives of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc. Umahi expressed grave concern over the condition of the bridge, which he said had been severely compromised due to unauthorized human activities beneath it.

“We are here with bridge experts to examine the Iddo Bridge, which was severely burnt and damaged due to unlawful occupation. The underpass has been turned into shops, warehouses, and even homes,” Umahi said. “Julius Berger has advised that the bridge must be completely demolished and rebuilt.”

He added that similar illegal activities have affected the Cowry and Independence Bridges, putting their structural integrity at risk. Attempts to dialogue with the occupants have failed, as many claim the issue is in court. Umahi, however, insisted that the government would not be deterred.

“It appears their business is more important to them than the lives of Lagosians. We cannot allow this to continue,” he stated.

He directed the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, to ensure that all illegal structures are cleared before the close of business on Monday. He also ordered police presence to secure any items discovered during the demolition.

“No significant goods have been found—mostly scrap materials. But any items must be documented,” he added.
