During the June war, Israel successfully tracked and targeted senior Iranian political and military leaders, including nuclear scientists, by exploiting vulnerabilities in their security protocols.

According to a report by New York Times on August 30, 2025, Iran, aware of Israel’s assassination plans, heightened security for its top officials.

However, this inadvertently enabled Israel to monitor and strike them.

Sasan Karimi, a former deputy vice president for strategy in Iran’s government and now a political analyst and lecturer at Tehran University, explained that senior officials and commanders avoided carrying phones to evade tracking.

However, their bodyguards and drivers continued using phones without taking serious precautions, making them traceable.

Israel capitalized on this oversight, as these personnel frequently posted on social media, exposing their locations.

An Israeli defense official revealed that Iran’s reliance on numerous bodyguards became a strategic weakness.

Israel deliberately exploited this flaw, using the bodyguards’ phones to gather intelligence and execute targeted strikes.

The official emphasized that the increased security measures, intended to protect Iranian leaders, backfired by creating opportunities for Israel to track them.

At the war’s outset, Israel devised a plan to decapitate Iran’s leadership, knowing that early strikes would be most effective.

One Israeli official disclosed that Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Revolutionary Guards’ Aerospace Force, was the initial target.

When Hajizadeh convened an emergency meeting with his senior staff, Israel launched a bombing that eliminated them, showcasing the precision of their intelligence.

After the initial strikes, Iran ordered bodyguards to use only walkie-talkies, restricting cellphone use to team leaders who did not accompany officials.

Despite these measures, some guards disobeyed, continuing to carry phones.

In at least one instance, this violation allowed Israel to target political leaders again, though the strike missed its intended targets.
