According to a report by Times of Israel, on August 30, 2025, Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reportedly believe that an airstrike conducted on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, has likely killed the entire Houthi cabinet, including the prime minister and 12 other ministers, according to reports from Channel 12 and other Israeli media outlets.
The cabinet meeting was targeted in a strike on August 28, 2025, amid rising tensions sparked by the ongoing conflict involving the Houthis and Israel.
The assessment by the IDF is not yet definitive, as officials continue to work to ascertain the full extent of casualties and damage resulting from the precision strike.
Channel 12 reported that the Houthi defense minister and military chief of staff were en route to the location of the cabinet meeting shortly before the attack and were apparently present when the site was hit.
Yemeni and Israeli media sources have identified some of the senior officials believed to be killed in the strike.
These include Houthi Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi, Defense Minister Mohamed al-Atifi, and Chief of Staff Muhammad Abd al-Karim al-Ghamari. Al-Rahawi was reportedly killed in his apartment during the attack.
The strike was monitored and authorized by top Israeli officials, including Defense Minister Israel Katz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The targeted airstrike is seen by Israel as a response to continued attacks by the Iran-backed Houthi movement, which has launched missiles and drones towards Israel and shipping lanes in the Red Sea
Israel regards the Houthis as a significant threat in the regional conflict and has been carrying out periodic precision air raids against their leadership and military infrastructure.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned, “As we warned the Houthis in Yemen: After the plague of darkness comes the plague of the firstborn.
Anyone who raises a hand against Israel – their hand will be severed.” Meanwhile, the Houthis deny targeting senior leaders and claim Israeli strikes harm civilians in Sanaa, which they accuse of supporting Gaza.
This strike represents a significant escalation in the proxy conflict between Iran-backed forces and Israel, with far-reaching implications for regional stability and security in the Middle East.
